Jordan Bernt Peterson (12 June 1962-) was a Canadian psychologist and right-liberal political commentator. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he worked as a clinical psychologist and as a professor at Harvard University and the University of Toronto before becoming Chancellor of Ralston College in 2022. Peterson became a best-selling author and popular media commentator due to his criticisms of political correctness and compelled speech (vociferously opposing a 2016 Canadian law requiring people to address transgender people by their chosen pronouns), and his views were often associated with conservatism. However, Peterson self-identified as a "classic British liberal", and he supported universal healthcare, redistribution of wealth towards the poor, and the decriminalization of drugs. Among his more controversial views were support for the defunding of women's studies; the avoidance of Marxist-influenced studies such as sociology, anthropology, ethnic studies, and racial studies; opposed identity politics due to their abuse by both the left and right; argued that the "masculine spirit" was under assault through the "feminization" of men, that patriarchy was built on competence rather than anti-female discrimination, and refused to use gender-affirming pronouns.
