Jonathan Worth NC

Jonathan Worth (18 November 1802-5 September 1869) was the Democratic Governor of North Carolina from 15 December 1865 to 1 July 1868, interrupting William Woods Holden's terms.

Biography[]

Jonathan Worth was born in Randolph County, North Carolina in 1802. He was originally a Whig and an advocate for free public education, and he served in the State House from 1830 to 1843, in the State Senate in 1843, as State Treasurer from 1863 to 1865, and as Governor from 1865 to 1868. He staunchly opposed secession, but remained loyal to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. He affiliated himself with the Conservative Party of North Carolina and served as Governor from 1865 to 1868 as the Conservative-Democratic candidate, and he died in 1869.
