Jonathan Masbath Sr. (1760-1799) was an American butler and servant of the Van Garret family.

Biography[]

Jonathan Masbath Senior was born in Sleepy Hollow in 1760. In 1784, he married Catherine Masbath and had a son one year later named Jonathan Masbath Jr. His wife died a few years later leaving him widower. In 1799, he was a witness of the testament of his boss Peter van Garret. Few days later, Ichabod Crane arrived in town and seaw young Masbath saying goodbye to Jonathan as Jonathan prepared to begin his night watch shift. That night, while standing guard, Jonathan saw how the fog extinguished the lights of the torches that were placed at the edge of the forest; which he took as a sign that he was approaching the Hessian. Jonathan prepared his gun and challenged the Hessian to appear, when he did Masbath opened fire but this did not affect the ghost. Terrified Masbath left the safety of his post and run into the forest but was chased and allegedly decapitated by the Headless Horseman.
