Jonathan Dickinson

Jonathan Dickinson (1663-1722) was Mayor of Philadelphia from 7 October 1712 to 6 October 1713 (succeeding Samuel Preston and preceding George Roach) and from 1 October 1717 to 6 October 1719 (succeeding Richard Hill and preceding William Fishbourn). Born in Port Royal, Jamaica, the son of Parliamentarian officer Francis Dickinson, he worked as a merchant and was shipwrecked in Florida in 1696, during which time he and his family, passengers, and crew were held captive by Jaega Indians before being allowed to leave for Saint Augustine. He was then sent by canoe by the Spaniards to Charleston, from where he headed to Philadelphia. He prospered there and twice served as mayor.
