
Joliet is a city in Will and Kendall Counties, Illinois, serving as the county seat of Will County. In 1834, James B. Campbell settled in the area and named it "Juliet" after his daughter, but it was renamed to "Joliet" in 1845 to honor the French explorer Louis Jolliet. In 1852, Joliet was reincorporated as a city, and it developed into a major city along the Des Plaines River in the Chicago metropolitan area (located 30 miles northeast of Joliet). In 2018, Joliet had a population of 148,099, with 67.48% being white, 27.84% Hispanic, 15.98% African-American, and 1.93% Asian.
