Johnny Paul Koroma (9 May 1960-1 June 2003) was the head of state of Sierra Leone from 25 May 1997 to 6 February 1998 between Ahmed Tejan Kabbah's two terms in office.
Biography[]
Johnny Paul Koroma was born on 9 May 1960 in Tombodu, Sierra Leone to Limba parents, and he joined the army in 1985. Koroma was trained in Nigeria and Britain before joining the Revolutionary United Front during the Sierra Leonean Civil War and becoming a major commander; he led the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council from May 1997 to February 1998, ruling over the country. In December 2002, he fled to Liberia as the civil war drew to a close in an AFRC defeat, as he refused to step down from his leadership position despite international pressure and fragmentation within the RUF. He was executed by Charles Taylor's forces in 2003, and he was declared dead on 1 June 2003.
