Johnny Chang was a Korean-American prison minister and former Wah Ching gang member from the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. Born to a Korean immigrant family of Chinese descent, he was raised in public housing by a father who had turned to alcoholism after killing someone in a car accident and a mother who was a devout Buddhist. Chang joined the Wah Ching gang to escape an abusive household and find a supportive new "family", and he was imprisoned from the age of 12 to the age of 24 after taking the fall for older gang members. His mother's conversion to Christianity, along with the loss of two of his friends, led Chang to explore his mother's faith through a supportive Korean pastor, and he underwent a spiritual conversion and mended his relationship with his father and even inspired several of his fellow gang members to start attending church. He became a prison minister and motivational speaker, and he was interviewed by former mobster Michael Franzese in 2023.
