
John of Strathbogie, Earl of Atholl (1250-7 November 1306) was Earl of Atholl from 1270 to 1306, succeeding David I Strathbogie and preceding David II Strathbogie.
Biography[]
John of Strathbogie was born in Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland in 1250, the son of David I Strathbogie. In 1284, he acknowledged Margaret, Maid of Norway as the heir to Alexander III of Scotland's throne, and he was captured at the Battle of Dunbar and sent to the Tower of London. After a year's confinement, he was set free in exchange for serving under King Edward I of England in Flanders. In 1306, he joined Robert Bruce in his rebellion against English overlordship, and he was hanged after being captured at the Battle of Methven in 1306.
