
John Young Brown (28 June 1835-11 January 1904) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-KY 5) from 3 December 1860 to 3 March 1861 (succeeding Joshua Jewett and preceding Charles Wickliffe) and from KY 2 from 4 March 1873 to 3 March 1877 (succeeding Henry D. McHenry and preceding James A. McKenzie), and Governor from 2 September 1891 to 10 December 1895 (succeeding Simon Bolivar Buckner and preceding William O'Connell Bradley).
Biography[]
John Young Brown was born in Claysville, Hardin County, Kentucky in 1835, the nephew of representatives Bryan Rust Young and William Singleton Young, and he became a lawyer in 1857. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1860 to 1861 despite being underage, and he was denied a seat in 1866 due to his loyalty to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. In 1872, he was elected to the House once more, and he took a break from politics from 1877 to 1891. In 1891, he was elected Governor, serving until 1895. He died in 1904.
