John Wesley Hoyt

John Wesley Hoyt (13 October 1831-23 May 1912) was the Republican Governor of the Wyoming Territory from 10 April 1878 to 22 August 1882, succeeding John Milton Thayer and preceding William Hale.

Biography[]

John Wesley Hoyt was born in Worthington, Ohio in 1831, and he moved to Wisconsin in 1857 and became a journalist and chairman of the Wisconsin Board of Railroad Commissioners from 1874 to 1876. He went on to serve as Governor of the Wyoming Territory from 1878 to 1882, and he strongly supported education; after leaving office, he served as president of the University of Wyoming. He died in Washington DC in 1912.
