John Waihe'e III

John Waihe'e III (19 May 1946-) was the Democratic Governor of Hawaii from 2 December 1986 to 2 December 1994, succeeding George Ariyoshi and preceding Ben Cayetano.

Biography[]

John Waihe'e III was born in Honoka'a, Hawaii in 1946, and he practiced law before serving as a delegate to the 1978 state constitutional convention, where he was instrumental in adopting the Hawaiian language as an official language of the state. He went on to serve in the state house from 1981 to 1983 and Lieutenant Governor from 1982 to 1986. In 1986, he succeeded the term-limited George Ariyoshi as Governor, overseeing a tourism boom and increased foreign investment, especially from Japan. He went on to become a prominent attorney and lobbyist.
