
John Vining (23 December 1758-February 1802) was a member of the US House of Representatives from Delaware's at-large district from 4 March 1789 to 3 March 1793, preceding John Patten, and a US Senator from 4 March 1793 to 19 January 1798, succeeding Richard Bassett and preceding Joshua Clayton. He was a member of the Federalist Party.
Biography[]
John Vining was born in Dover, Delaware in 1758, and he studied law under George Read in New Castle. He became a lawyer in 1782, starting a practice in Dover. From 1784 to 1786, he served in the Continental Congress, and he served in the Delaware House of Assembly from 1787 to 1788 and from 1788 to 1789. In 1789, he was elected to represent Delaware in the US House of Representatives, serving until 1793; from 1793 to 1798, he also served in the US Senate as a member of the Federalist Party. Vining retired in 1798 and died in Wilmington in 1802.
