
John Van Voorhis (22 October 1826-20 October 1905) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-NY 30) from 4 March 1879 to 3 March 1883 (succeeding Elizur K. Hart and preceding Halbert S. Greenleaf) and from NY-31 from 4 March 1893 to 3 March 1895 (succeeding James Wolcott Wadsworth and preceding Henry C. Brewster).
Biography[]
John Van Voorhis was born in Decatur, New York in 1826, and he was raised in Mendon. He practiced law in Elmira and Rochester before serving as city attorney in 1859, as an internal revenue collector from 1862 to 1863, and in the US House of Representatives from 1879 to 1883 and from 1893 to 1895. As a lawyer, Van Voorhis made the acquaintance of Susan B. Anthony, Martha Matilda Harper, and Frederick Douglass and defended the Seneca nation against a land company's claims in 1895. He died in 1905.
