John Tipton (14 August 1786 – 5 April 1839) was a US Senator from Indiana (D) from 3 January 1832 to 3 March 1839, succeeding Robert Hanna and preceding Albert Smith White.
Biography[]
John Tipton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee in 1786, and his father was killed by Native Americans when he was six. At the age of 17, he moved to Harrison County, Indiana, where he became a farmer and a militia officer. He fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe and in the War of 1812, and he was promoted to Brigadier-General upon the war's end. From 1819 to 1823, he served in the State House of Representatives, and he was appointed to the US Senate in 1832. He served until 1839, and he was a strong supporter of Andrew Jackson. He died a month after leaving office.
