John Taylor (19 December 1753 – 21 August 1824) was a US Senator from Virginia from 18 October 1792 to 11 May 1794 (succeeding Richard Henry Lee and preceding Henry Tazewell), from 4 June to 7 December 1803 (succeeding Stevens Thomson Mason and preceding Abraham B. Venable), and from 18 December 1822 to 21 August 1824 (succeeding James Pleasants and preceding Littleton Waller Tazewell). He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party.
Biography[]
John Taylor was born in Caroline County, Virginia in 1753, and he became a lawyer in 1774 and served as a cavalry colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. From 1779 to 1787, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates, and he then served in the US Senate from 1792 to 1794, in 1803, and from 1822 to 1824 as a Democratic-Republican Party member. A prolific political writer, he supported republicanism and classical liberalism, and his views shaped modern libertarianism. He died in office in 1824.
