John Taylor (4 May 1770 – 16 April 1832) was a member of the US House of Representatives from South Carolina's 4th district from 4 March 1807 to 30 December 1810 (succeeding O'Brien Smith and preceding William Lowndes), a US Senator from 31 December 1810 to November 1816 (succeeding Thomas Sumter and preceding William Smith), and Governor of South Carolina from 9 December 1826 to 10 December 1828 (succeeding Richard Irvine Manning I and preceding Stephen Decatur Miller). He was a Democratic-Republican.
Biography[]
John Taylor was born in Granby, South Carolina in 1770, and he practiced law in Columbia. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1796 to 1802 and again from 1804 to 1805, and he went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1807 to 1810 and in the US Senate from 1810 to 1816. From 1818 to 1826, he served in the State Senate, and he then served as Governor from 1826 to 1828. He died in 1832.
