John Smith (1735-30 July 1824) was a US Senator from Ohio from 1 April 1803 to 25 April 1808, preceding Return J. Meigs, Jr.. He was a Democratic-Republican.

Biography[]

John Smith was born in Virginia, and he served as a minister in the Northwest Territory duirng the 1790s before profiting from supplying military posts near Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1799 to 1803, he served in the Northwest Territorial legislature, and he was a delegate to the 1802 Ohio constitutional convention. In 1803, he became one of Ohio's inaugural US Senators, serving until 1808. He was expelled from the Senate after it was discovered that he had intended to supply Aaron Burr's planned conquest of the Southwest from Mexico, and he became a Methodist preacher in St. Francisville, Louisiana. He died in 1824.
