John Selby Spence (29 February 1788 – 24 October 1840) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-MD 8) from 4 March 1823 to 3 March 1825 (succeeding Thomas Bayly and preceding Robert N. Martin) and from 4 March 1831 to 3 March 1833 (succeeding Ephraim King Wilson and preceding John Truman Stoddert) and a US Senator from 31 December 1836 to 24 October 1840 (succeeding Robert Henry Goldsborough and preceding John Leeds Kerr).

Biography[]

John Selby Spence was born near Snow Hill, Maryland on 29 February 1788, and he practiced medicine in Worcester County. He served in the House of Delegates and State Senate before serving in the US House of Representatives from 1823 to 1825 and from 1831 to 1833, and, in 1836, he was appointed to the US Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert Henry Goldsborough. Spence himself died in office in 1840.
