John Ruggles

John Ruggles (8 October 1789 – 20 June 1874) was a US Senator from Maine (D) from 20 January 1835 to 3 March 1841, succeeding Peleg Sprague and preceding George Evans.

Biography[]

John Ruggles was born in Westborough, Massachusetts in 1789, and he became a lawyer in Skowhegan, Maine in 1815. From 1823 to 1831, he served in the State House of Representatives, and he was appointed to finish Peleg Sprague's US Senate term in 1835, serving until 1841. He returned to his law practice, and he died in 1874.
