John Rodgers (admiral)

John Rodgers (8 August 1812-5 May 1882) was a US Navy Admiral who served in the Second Seminole War, the American Civil War, and the United States expedition to Korea.

Biography[]

John Rodgers was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland in 1812, the son of Commodore John Rodgers. He was commissioned a midshipman in the US Navy in 1828, and he served in the Mediterranean before commanding naval infantry in Florida during the Second Seminole War, as commander of the North Pacific Exploring and Surveying Expedition during the mid-1850s, and as a Commander during the American Civil War, during which he took part in the blockade of Georgia and the siege of Charleston. After the war, he commanded the Boston Navy Yard until 1869, when he was promoted to Rear Admiral and given command of the Asiatic Squadron. He went on to lead the United States expedition to Korea in 1871, after which he served as president of the United States Naval Institute from 1879 to 1881. He died in 1882 while serving as superintendent of the Naval Observatory.
