John Roberts (27 January 1955-) was Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court from 29 September 2005, succeeding William Rehnquist.
Biography[]
John Roberts was born in Buffalo, New York in 1955, and he grew up in northwest Indiana. After being admitted to the bar, he served as a law clerk under William Rehnquist, and he worked in the Attorney General's office during Ronald Reagan's presidency. Roberts served as Associate Counsel to the President from 1982 to 1986, Principal Deputy Solicitor General from 1989 to 1993, and a US circuit court judge from Washington DC from 2003 to 2005, when he was nominated to the US Supreme Court by President George W. Bush following the death of William Rehnquist. While he was a conservative, he showed willingness to work with the Court's liberal bloc and was regarded as a key swing vote on the court.
