John Quin was an Anglo-Irish soldier who served as a captain in the British Army's Kilwangen Regiment during the Seven Years' War. In 1759, amid fears of a French invasion, Brady Town, Ireland sent a company to join the Kilwangen Regiment, of which Quin was the captain. Quin became infatuated with Nora Brady, competing with Redmond Barry for her affection. Ultimately, Barry challenged Quin to a duel and seemingly killed him, only to later learn that Brady's family arranged the duel and Quin's faked death so that Brady would be forced to marry Quin and improve her family's finances.
