
John Pope (February 1770-12 July 1845) was a US Senator from Kentucky from 4 March 1807 to 3 March 1813, succeeding Henry Clay and preceding Jesse Bledsoe; Governor of the Arkansas Territory from 9 March 1829 to 9 March 1835, succeeding George Izard and preceding William S. Fulton; and a member of the US House of Representatives from Kentucky's 7th district from 4 March 1837 to 3 March 1843, succeeding Benjamin Hardin and preceding William Thomasson. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican, Democratic, and Whig parties, and he was the uncle of Union general John Pope.
Biography[]
John Pope was born in Prince William County, Virginia in 1770, and he lost his arm during his youth. He became a lawyer in Springfield, Kentucky, and he served as a presidential elector in 1801. He served in the State House of Representatives in 1802 and from 1806 to 1807, and he then served in the US Senate from 1807 to 1813 as a Democratic-Republican. From 1816 to 1819, he served as Secretary of State of Kentucky, and he served in the Kentucky Senate from 1825 to 1829. From 1829 to 1835, as a member of the Democratic Party, he served as Governor of the Arkansas Territory, but he became a Whig during his terms in the US House of Representatives from 1837 to 1843. He died in 1845.
