John P. Stockton

John Potter Stockton (2 August 1826-22 January 1900) was a Democratic US Senator from New Jersey from 15 March 1865 to 27 March 1866 (succeeding John C. Ten Eyck and preceding Alexander G. Cattell) and from 4 March 1869 to 3 March 1875 (succeeding Frederick T. Frelinghuysen and preceding Theodore F. Randolph).

Biography[]

John Potter Stockton was born in Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey in 1826, the son of Robert F. Stockton. He became a lawyer in 1846, practicing in Princeton and Trenton. He served as reporter of decisions from 1852 to 1858, as Ambassador to the Papal States from 1858 to 1861, in the US Senate from 1865 to 1866 and from 1869 to 1875, and as Attorney General of New Jersey from 1877 to 1897. He was also a delegate to the 1872 and 1884 Democratic National Conventions, and he died in 1900.
