John Owen NC

John Owen (August 1787-9 October 1841) was the Democratic Governor of North Carolina from 12 December 1828 to 18 December 1830, succeeding James Iredell Jr. and preceding Montfort Stokes.

Biography[]

John Owen was born in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1787, and he served in the House of Commons from 1812 to 1814, in the State Senate from 1819 to 1820, in the State Senate from 1827 to 1828, and as Governor from 1828 to 1830. During his term, he promoted education. Owen defected to the Whigs in 1839, and he declined to serve as William Henry Harrison's running mate in 1840; that role went to another former Democrat, John Tyler. He died in 1841.
