John Neville (general)

John Neville (26 July 1731-29 July 1803) was an American general and tax collector.

Biography[]

John Neville was born in Gloucester County, Virginia in 1731, and he served in the militia during the French and Indian War, during which time he served with Edward Braddock and George Washington. After the war, he became sheriff of Winchester, and he served in Lord Dunmore's War before settling near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the American Revolutionary War, he served in the Virginia line of the Continental Army, and he served in the State Senate in 1783. He went on to serve as a revenue collector in Pennsylvania, and his collection culminated in the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. He died at Neville Township in 1803.
