
John Moses (12 June 1885-3 March 1945) was the Democratic Governor of North Dakota from 5 January 1939 to 4 January 1945 (succeeding William Langer and preceding Fred G. Aandahl) and a US Senator from 3 January to 3 March 1945 (succeeding Gerald Nye and preceding Milton Young).
Biography[]
John Moses was born in Strand, Rogaland, Norway in 1885, and he emigrated to the United States in 1905 and worked for the Great Northern Railway from 1906 to 1911 before becoming a lawyer in Hazen, North Dakota. Moses served as Mercer County state's attorney from 1919 to 1923 and from 1927 to 1933, as Governor from 1939 to 1945 (supporting spending cuts and a balanced budget, while opposing the Nonpartisan League), and as a US Senator for just 59 days in 1945 before dying; he was the shortest-serving US Senator (excluding those appointed to fill brief vacancies and those not seated at the beginning of their lawful terms).
