John Milton Niles (20 August 1787 – 31 May 1856) was a US Senator from Connecticut (D) from 21 December 1835 to 4 March 1839 (succeeding Nathan Smith and preceding Thaddeus Betts) and from 4 March 1843 to 4 March 1849 (succeeding Perry Smith and preceding Truman Smith), and US Postmaster General from 19 May 1840 to 4 March 1841 (succeeding Amos Kendall and preceding Francis Granger).
Biography[]
John Milton Niles was born in Windsor, Connecticut in 1787, and he was admitted to the bar in 1817. He was also a newspaper publisher for several years, and he supported states' rights. Niles served in the state legislature and as Postmaster of Hartford from 1829 to 1836, and he served in the US Senate from 1835 to 1839, finishing Nathan Smith's term. He then served as Postmaster General from 1840 to 1841, ending delivery of mail on Sunday, and he returned to the Senate from 1843 to 1849. He died in 1856.
