
John Macdonell (19 April 1785-14 October 1812) was a Lieutenant-Colonel of the British Army during the War of 1812 and the aide-de-camp to General Isaac Brock at the Battle of Queenston Heights, during which he was killed.
Biography[]
John Macdonell was born in Aberchalder, Scotland on 19 April 1785, and he came to Canada when he was seven years old. He became a lawyer at the age of 23, and he became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the York militia. When the War of 1812, he became the aide-de-camp to General Isaac Brock, and he led a second attempt to take the redan from the US Army at the Battle of Queenston Heights after Brock was killed. Macdonell was shot in the back after being unhorsed, and he died of his injuries the next day, being buried next to Brock.
