John James Patterson (8 August 1830-28 September 1912) was a Republican US Senator from South Carolina from 4 March 1873 to 3 March 1879, succeeding Frederick A. Sawyer and preceding Wade Hampton III.

Biography[]

John James Patterson was born in Waterloo, Juniata County, Pennsylvania in 1830, and he became a newspaper editor before serving in the State House in 1859. He went on to serve in the Union Army during the American Civil War before moving to Columbia, South Carolina, and he became a "carpetbagger" Republican US Senator in 1873, serving until 1879. After the end of Reconstruction, he moved to Washington DC and died in 1912.
