John Hoeven

John Hoeven (13 March 1957-) was the US Senator from North Dakota (R) from 3 January 2011, succeeding Byron Dorgan. He had previously served as Governor of North Dakota from 15 December 2000 to 7 December 2010, succeeding Ed Schafer and preceding Jack Dalrymple.

Biography[]

John Hoeven was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on 13 March 1957, and he graduated from Dartmouth College and from Northwestern University. He worked as a banker in Minot, and he served as President and CEO of the Bank of North Dakota from 1993 to 2000. In 2000, he defeated Heidi Heitkamp to become the Governor of North Dakota, and he was re-elected in 2004 and 2008. He oversaw the expansion and diversification of the state economy, increasing the real GDP of the state by 49.5%. North Dakota gained 40,000 jobs since he gained office, and he had an 87% approval rating in 2009. In 2010, he was elected to the US Senate, and he supported pro-gun legislation (while also supporting some gun control measures), public health for the elderly and children, opposed same-sex marriage, investment tax credits for farm investments, and was pro-life.
