John Hardy Steele

John Hardy Steele (4 January 1789-3 July 1865) was the Democratic Governor of New Hampshire from 6 June 1844 to 4 June 1846, succeeding Henry Hubbard and preceding Anthony Colby.

Biography[]

John Hardy Steele was born in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1789, the son of an adulterer and his lover; he was raised by his maternal grandfather and learned to build chairs and cabinets. While working in Fayetteville, he was hired to join a textile manufacturing business in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and he cofounded a cloth factory in 1824. He served in the State House in 1829, as town moderator from 1830 to 1838, as a colonel in the state militia, on the Executive Council from 1840 to 1842, and as Governor from 1844 to 1846. He died in 1865.
