
John Henry Sununu (2 July 1939-) was the White House Chief of Staff from 20 January 1989 to 15 December 1991, succeeding Ken Duberstein and preceding Samuel K. Skinner, and Governor of New Hampshire (R) from 6 January 1983 to 4 January 1989, succeeding Vesta M. Roy and preceding Judd Gregg.
Biography[]
John Henry Sununu was born in Havana, Cuba on 2 July 1939, the son of an international film distributor. He became an engineer after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he taught at Tufts University from 1966 to 1982. From 1973 to 1975, he served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party, and he was elected Governor of New Hampshire in 1982. From 1983 to 1989, he served as New Hampshire's first Arab-American governor, and he served as President George H.W. Bush's White House Chief of Staff from 1989 to 1991. Sununu engineered Bush's decision to implement new taxes and making David Souter a US Supreme Court justice. In 1991, Sununu resigned at the recommendation of George W. Bush.
