John H. Mickey

John Hopwood Mickey (30 September 1845-2 June 1910) was the Republican Governor of Nebraska from 8 January 1903 to 3 January 1907, succeeding Ezra P. Savage and preceding George L. Sheldon.

Biography[]

John Hopwood Mickey was born in Burlington, Iowa in 1845, and he was raised in Louisa County and Mount Pleasant before serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1868, he moved to Osceola, Nebraska, opening a bank in 1879. While his father was a Democrat and supporter of Stephen A. Douglas, Mickey always identified as a Republican, having voted for Abraham Lincoln in 1864. He served as Polk County treasurer before serving in the State House and as Governor from 1903 to 1907, and he failed to arbitrate a 1903 strike in Omaha. Mickey was a lifelong supporter of Prohibition, and he died in 1910.
