John Gilbert Winant

John Gilbert Winant (23 February 1889-3 November 1947) was the Republican Governor of New Hampshire from 1 January 1925 to 6 January 1927 (succeeding Fred H. Brown and preceding Huntley N. Spaulding) and from 1 January 1931 to 3 January 1935 (succeeding Charles W. Tobey and preceding Styles Bridges).

Biography[]

John Gilbert Winant was born in New York City, New York in 1889, and he was raised in Concord, New Hampshire. He worked as a history teacher at St. Paul's College before serving in the State House in 1916, as a US Army Air Service captain in France during World War I, in the State Senate in 1920, as the liberal Republican Governor of New Hampshire from 1925 to 1927 and from 1931 to 1935, as head of the Social Security Board from 1935 to 1937, as Director-General of the International Labor Organization from 1939 to 1941, and as Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1941 to 1946. However, he grew estranged from his socially ambitious wife and fell into debt, and he shot himself in 1947.
