The John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the primary airport for New York City, located in Jamaica, Queens. The airport was built in 1948 as "New York International Airport", and it was commonly known as "Idlewild Airport" until it was renamed in 1963 to honor the assassinated President of the United States John F. Kennedy. The airport featured six passenger terminals and four runways, and it served as a hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, the primary operating base for JetBlue Airways, and as a historical hub for Pan Am, TWA, Eastern, National, and Tower Air. Over 90 airlines operate out of the airport, and it has non-stop or direct flights to all six continents. In 2016, the airport handled just under 59,000,000 passengers, making it the busiest air gateway into America, the fifth-busiest in the USA, and the sixteenth-busiest in the world.
