John Edmiston

John Edmiston (27 September 1774 – 12 January 1827) was an American plantation owner.

Biography[]

John Edmiston was born on 27 September 1774 in Norfolk, Virginia to a landed family of Protestant English-Americans. Edmiston became the owner of the New Cardiff plantation in Norfolk, and he grew cotton there. He was a wealthy man as a result of his slaveowning, and he decided to free all of his slaves when he lay on his deathbed in 1827. Edmiston died on 12 January after granting manumission to all of his slaves, one of which was future Liberian politician Linus Edmiston.
