
John Edward Davis (18 April 1913-12 May 1990) was the Republican Governor of North Dakota from 9 January 1957 to 4 January 1961, succeeding Norman Brunsdale and preceding William L. Guy.
Biography[]
John Edward Davis was born in Goodrich, North Dakota in 1913, and he attended high school in Fargo and Bismarck before serving in the US Army in Western Europe during World War II, taking part in Operation Overlord, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Central Europe Campaign and ending the war with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Davis served as Mayor of McClusky from 1946 to 1952, in the State Senate from 1952 to 1956, as Governor from 1957 to 1961, as national commander of the American Legion from 1966 to 1967, Director of the Office of Civil Defense from 1969 to 1972, and Director of the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency from 1972 to 1977. He died in 1990.
