
John Ewing Colhoun (1749-26 October 1802) was a US Senator from South Carolina from 4 March 1801 to 26 October 1802, succeeding Jacob Read and preceding Pierce Butler. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party.
Biography[]
John Ewing Colhoun was born in Staunton, Virginia to Scots-Irish immigrants from County Donegal, and he changed his surname from "Calhoun" to "Colhoun". He served in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War, and he became a lawyer in 1783. Colhoun would acquire several plantations after the war, and he was elected to the US Senate in 1801; however, he died in office.
