John De Hart

John De Hart (25 July 1727-1 June 1795) was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress in 1774 and 1775.

Biography[]

John De Hart was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1727, and he was admitted to the bar in 1770. In 1774, he was named as a delegate to the First Continental Congress, and he supported the non-importation agreement and a petition to King George III, although he supported reconciliation with Great Britain. In 1775, he wrote his resignation to the New Jersey General Assembly due to the failure to prevent war with Britain, but he drafted the state constitution in June 1776. From September 1776 to February 1777, he served on the New Jersey Supreme Court, and he served as Mayor of Elizabeth from 1789 until his death in 1795.
