John Conyers (16 May 1929 – 27 October 2019) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-MI 1) from 3 January 1965 to 3 January 1993 (succeeding Lucien N. Nedzi and preceding Bart Stupak), from MI-14 from 3 January 1993 to 3 January 2013 (succeeding Dennis M. Hertel and preceding Gary Peters), and from MI-13 from 3 January 2013 to 5 December 2017 (succeeding Hansen Clarke and preceding Brenda Jones).
Biography[]
John Conyers was born in Highland Park, Michigan in 1929, and he served in the US Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. He took part in the Civil Rights movement demonstrations of the 1960s, and he also became a lawyer and a prominent Democratic politician in Detroit. He co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969 and became known as one of the most liberal members of the US Congress, sponsoring a 2003 bill to create a national healthcare system and playing an instrumental role in making Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a national holiday. In November 2017, he was accused of sexually harassing female staff members and using taxpayer money to settle a harassment claim, leading to him announcing his immediate resignation on 5 December 2017. He endorsed his son John Conyers III to replace him in Congress. He died on 27 October 2019 at the age of 90.
