John Clark GA

John Clark (28 February 1766 – 12 October 1832) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of Georgia from 1819 to 1823, succeeding Matthew Talbot and preceding George Troup.

Biography[]

John Clark was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina in 1766, the son of Elijah Clarke. He served under his father during the American Revolutionary War and became a Major-General in 1796 after moving to Wilkes County. He served as a Democratic-Republican presidential elector in 1816 and as Governor from 1819 to 1823, defending states' rights. He died in 1832.
