
John Catlin (13 October 1803 – 4 August 1874) was Governor of Wisconsin from 23 June 1848 to 3 March 1849, succeeding Henry Dodge and preceding Nelson Dewey.
Biography[]
John Catlin was born in Orwell, Vermont in 1803, and he worked as a schoolteacher and a lawyer before moving to Mineral Point, Wisconsin in 1836 and becoming postmaster of Madison a year later. He became President of the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad before serving in the State House, the Territorial Council, District Attorney of Dane County from 1839 to 1843, Secretary of State of Wisconsin from 1846 to 1849, and acting Governor from 1848 to 1849. He was the last territorial governor of the state, and he died in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1874.
