John Cromwell Bell Jr. (25 October 1892-18 March 1974) was the Republican Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 20 January 1943 to 2 January 1947 (succeeding Samuel S. Lewis and preceding Daniel Strickler) and Governor of Pennsylvania from 2 to 21 January 1947 (succeeding Edward Martin and preceding James H. Duff).
Biography[]
John Cromwell Bell Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of State Attorney General John C. Bell Sr. and the grandson of Leonard Myers. He became assistant city solicitor of Philadelphia in 1919, serving for three years; he went on to serve as assistant district attorney of Philadelphia from 1922 to 1925, strongly opposed the New Deal, served as Lieutenant Governor from 1943 to 1947 (and briefly as Governor in January 1947) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1950 to 1961, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1961 to 1972.
