John Byron, 1st Baron Byron

John Byron, 1st Baron Byron (1599-23 August 1652) was an English Cavalier general during the English Civil War.

Biography[]

John Byron was born in Newstead, Nottinghamshire, England in 1599, and he served as MP for Nottingham in 1624 and 1626, when he was knighted. When the English Civil War broke out in 1642, he joined King Charles I of England at York, and he was created a baron in 1643 following the First Battle of Newbury. He became commander of the Cavalier forces in Lancashire and Cheshire, and he was defeated at the Battle of Nantwich. He commanded the royalist right flank at the Battle of Marston Moor, and his forces were routed in the ensuing battle, forcing him to resign upon retreating to Caernarvon. He ably defended Caernarvon until its fall to Parliamentarian forces in 1646, and he died in exile in Paris in 1652.
