John Bingham (1953-14 September 1986) was an Ulster Volunteer Force leader during The Troubles. He was assassinated by the Provisional IRA in 1986.
Biography[]
John Bingham was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1953 to a family of Ulster Protestants, and he worked as a shopkeeper. He joined the Ulster Volunteer Force during The Troubles in the 1970s, and he raised funds for the UVF in Toronto, Canada. In July 1986, he was responsible for the murder of 25-year-old Catholic civilian Colm McCallan close to his Ligoniel home, and the Provisional IRA decided to avenge him by killing Bingham. On 14 September 1986, the IRA broke into his home and shot him in the legs; Bingham tried to flee up his stairs, but he was shot three more times, killing him. This set off a series of tit-for-tat murders between the UVF and the IRA.
