
John Berry (1619-1712) was the acting Governor of New Jersey from 1672 to 1673, succeeding Philip Carteret and preceding Anthony Colve.
Biography[]
In 1664, Captain John Berry was granted land in Achter Kol, New Jersey by Governor Philip Carteret, and he soon took up resident and called it "New Barbadoes" after his previous residence, Barbados. From 1672 to 1673, he served as Deputy Governor of New Jersey while Carteret was in England, and he served on the East Jersey Provincial Council in 1662. Berrys Creek in the Meadowlands is named for him.
