John Bernard Books in 1901.

John Bernard Books (29 January 1843-29 January 1901) was a former lawman and gunslinger in the Wild West era. Books is famous for the 1901 Carson City Saloon Shootout, in which he and all the other participants were killed. Books was suffering from terminal cancer and chose to go out on his feet. He became a mentor to a young Gillam Rogers, who avenged his death. Books was deadly fast with a pair of matching 45 caliber Colt Revolvers. He was good friends with "Lakota" Bob Smith. He was enemies with the outlaw Mike Sweeney, who he killed in the 1901 Carson City Saloon Shootout. He was active from 1871-1901.
