John Barker (1746-3 April 1818) was Mayor of Philadelphia from 1808 to 1810 (succeeding Robert Wharton and preceding Michael Keppele) and from 1812 to 1813 (succeeding Wharton and preceding John Geyer).

Biography[]

John Barker was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1746, and he served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, as well as serving as Sheriff of Philadelphia from 1794 to 1797 and from 1803 to 1807. He retired from the military in 1808 with the rank of Major-General, and he served as Mayor from 1808 to 1810 and from 1812 to 1813. He served on the city's Committee of Defense during the War of 1812, and he died in 1818. One year later, his son James Nelson Barker became Mayor of Philadelphia.
