John Benedict Steele (28 March 1814-24 September 1866) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NY 11) from 4 March 1861 to 3 March 1863 (succeeding William S. Kenyon and preceding Charles H. Winfield) and from NY-13 from 4 March 1863 to 3 March 1865 (succeeding Abram B. Olin and preceding Edwin N. Hubbell).
Biography[]
John Benedict Steele was born in Delhi, New York in 1814, and he became a lawyer in Oneonta in 1839. He served as Otsego County district attorney from 1841 to 1847, when he moved to Kingston, and he served as a judge of Ulster County in 1850 and 1860. He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1861 to 1865 as a Democrat, and he died in a carriage accident in 1866.
